Frequently Asked Questions

How much time will I need to devote to a course?
Accreditation requirements normally require that a 3.0-semester hour course have 45 contact (class meeting) hours. The recommended study time for any class is 1-2 hours outside of class for each hour in class. This formula means that you should commit a total of about 90 hours (or more) to each course you take. Since Online Education is offered in 15-week, 10-week and 7 1/2-week formats, you will need to adjust your study time accordingly.

How do I know what textbooks and materials I'll need for my course?
Go to the Course Schedules Page and click on either Online or Videocourses for the current semester. On the schedule page, click on the link to the course which you are registered for. All courses should have a link at least one week prior to the beginning of the semester. If your course is not linked, then contact the department office.

Will my college credits from another school transfer to Allen University?
A transcript from the school you attended needs to accompany your application for admission. The Allen University Admissions Office will determine which courses may be used for credit toward the degree, diploma, or certificate you have selected at Allen University.

What if I need some help?
Allen staff is here to help you. Your instructor will provide assistance. Allen University encourages students to use The Writing Center, Math Lab, and other campus resources. See your Advisor or the Online Education Division Office for details.

What if I start a course and find out it's not for me?
First, discuss the situation with your instructor. The Division Support Staff may be able to assist with technical problems. If there is no other choice, withdrawing from a course may be accomplished with assistance from the Division Support Staff.

Will I ever have to come to Allen University Campus?
No

What if I've never taken a college course before?
First, you need to complete an Application for Admission either online or in person at our campus. If you have not taken a college-level course before, you will need to take a Placement Test. An Admissions Officer will help you through the initial process, and then an Advisor will register you for the appropriate course.
